Fade Away Riddim – Heartical Records

Mykal Rose is the anchor here, and Heartical Records wisely lets his “Never Surrender” carry the kind of weight that gives the whole Fade Away Riddim its shape. The 2005 set only runs five cuts, but it moves with a clear roots reggae feel: Hopeton James opens with the tense “The Stalker, ” Melodica Way’s “Basque Dub Foundation” leans into the dubby side of the session, and Uman and Difanga’s “Plus 2 Love” adds a softer, more uplifted turn before Wayne Smith closes with the reflective “Ask Jah. ” Heartical, the Paris-based outfit that built a long catalogue around reggae one-riddim projects and Basque Dub Foundation work, keeps the production focused and spare, leaving space for the voices to do the talking. Still, it’s Mykal Rose who leaves the last mark, turning “Never Surrender” into the cut that lingers after the riddim fades.
