    Egyptian Riddim - Blaxxx Records

Blaxxx Records’ Egyptian Riddim arrived in 2003 as a strong slice of the era when dancehall juggling albums were still driving the scene. The production is credited to Daniel Lewis and Donovan Bennett, with Lewis behind Blaxxx Records and Bennett already deep in the same dancehall lane through a run of sharp, radio-ready riddims.

The instrumental has that early-2000s bounce: tight drum programming, a heavy rolling bassline, and a melody that plays with a distinctly exotic, Nile-side feel without losing the street pressure dancehall needed at the time. It sits in that space where club energy and sly party talk meet, which is why the riddim pulled such a heavy set of voices. Vybz Kartel’s Sweet To The Belly, Sean Paul’s Get With It Girl, Elephant Man’s Egyptian Dance, Assassin’s It’s A Girl Thing, Wayne Marshall’s I Will Love The Girls, Bounty Killer’s Warlord Vex, T. O. K. ’s Coulda Wha, Kid Kurupt’s Sake A Dat Gal, Sizzla’s These Are The Days, Bling Dawg’s Pure Gal, Degree’s Hotties and Buccaneer’s Gal Yuh Nah all fit the framework without sounding interchangeable.

The best cuts are the ones that show how flexible the riddim was. Elephant Man brings the most obvious club heat, Kartel folds his melody into the groove with his usual ease, and Bounty Killer gives the project some veteran weight. Even with its playful title, Egyptian is a hard-working juggling riddim: glossy enough for radio, rugged enough for soundsystem rotation, and lined with voices that defined dancehall’s 2003 moment.
