Disobey Riddim comes in with that conscious, militant edge Rebelmadiaq Sound has long favoured: a tight four-track one-riddim set cut in Barcelona with Luciano’s “People’s Defender” and Macka B’s “System No Nice” doing the heavy lifting on the message side. Luciano sounds steely and resolute, while Macka B slips into his familiar anti-system mode with real ease; Sr Wilson’s “Hard Work” and Irie Souljah’s “Jah Guide” keep the same forward motion, and the dub version at the end gives the whole thing a nice extra pull. Produced with Chalart58 and released in February 2015, it sits right in that Spain-to-Jamaica link-up Rebelmadiaq has been building for years, with the voices carrying the track’s protest spirit more than any flashy trickery.
