Desert Riddim – Notnice Records

Desert Riddim arrived in late 2013 from Notnice Records, the Jamaican imprint run by Ainsley “Notnice” Morris, a producer who had already earned a reputation for sharp, street-level dancehall and for spotting artists before they fully broke wide. By then, his name was already tied to some of the scene’s most talked-about early-2010s work, and this riddim sits comfortably in that run of dark, forward-driving productions.

The set has a tense, rugged pulse rather than a glossy party feel. The drum pattern is lean, the bass is heavy, and the arrangement leaves enough space for the deejays to cut through with menace. That atmosphere suits the subject matter across the board: badmind, obeah, dead talk, fool talk, and general warning chants. Versatile’s “Bound Fi Dead” and “Mek Fi Gyal” give the juggling a lively, aggressive edge, while I-Octane’s “Dem A Fool” and Bugle’s “No Regard” bring a harder, more disciplined tone. Deva Bratt’s “Living Evil” and Jah Frass’s “Friends With Benefits” keep the badman energy rolling, but Alkaline is the name that really fixed this riddim in memory. “Obeah” and “Ready, ” especially in both clean and raw versions, gave the project its strongest moment and hinted at the run of early-2010s momentum that would soon make him one of dancehall’s most closely watched young voices.

Bookie’s “Bagga Talk” and Dosa Medicine’s “Seh Mi Fi Dead” add to the grim mood, making Desert Riddim feel less like a party set and more like a warning siren. It is one of those Notnice juggling where the production and the songs match each other’s edge almost perfectly.
