First Take Riddim – Madd Spider Productions

First Take Riddim came out of Madd Spider Productions in 2013, and it sits in that early-2010s dancehall space where sharp digital drums, a bouncing one-drop feel, and a clean instrumental bed leave room for singers and deejays to work the pocket. Madd Spider Productions was already active as a label and production outfit by then, and this release lines up with the kind of juggling-driven catalogue that kept its name moving through the period.

The strongest pull here is the mix of voices. Wayne Wonder brings the smooth, melodic side of the set with “Emergency Call, ” which suits his reputation as one of dancehall’s more tuneful singers. Delly Ranx, a longtime fixture on the Jamaican dancehall scene, rides the rhythm with “Life Is A Blessing” in a more direct style. Bencil appears twice on “Feel The Vibes, ” in raw and clean versions, which gives the release a more current street edge and also shows how these riddims often travel in radio-friendly and explicit forms. Froggy Madd Squad’s “Money This Year” adds a hustler’s pressure, while Loyal Flames, Malica, Jahranimo, and Ryme Minister keep the energy rooted in everyday dancehall themes: survival, relationships, ambition, and forward motion.
