Built around the 1968 Studio One foundation originally cut by Rolando Alphonso and The Soul Vendors, Death In The Arena brings together a wide spread of producers and labels, with later versions linked to Philip Burrell, Coxsone Dodd, King Jammy, Bobby Digital, Harry J and others. The collection runs from rocksteady-era cuts like Alton Ellis’s Whipping The Prince to later dancehall takes from Admiral Bailey, Beenie Man, Bounty Killer and Admiral Tibet, showing how long this rhythm stayed in circulation. Standout versions include Alton Ellis’s original-era cut, Admiral Bailey’s Right Foot Out and Beenie Man’s Mek It Tan So Den, with the tracklist also stretching through roots voices and dubplate-style updates. It is a good example of a classic Studio One pattern that kept getting reworked across different eras, from the late 1960s into the 1990s.
