Coolie Skank Riddim – Kings Of Kings

Coolie Skank Riddim is one of the sharper early-2000s Kings of Kings juggling beats, the same rhythm that circulated in some places as Coolie Dance. Cordel “Scatta” Burrell and Everton “Eva” Burrell produced it in 2003, and Kings of Kings pushed it as part of the Riddim Driven wave through VP Records. The set later gained an extra life beyond dancehall, but the original cut is pure sound-system business: brisk, rubbery, and built on a bright, forward-driving bounce that leaves plenty of room for singjay phrasing, shouted hooks, and crowd-response lines.

The lineup is stacked with voices that knew how to work a busy rhythm. Beenie Man’s Good Woe brings that easy, teasing command he was riding so well in that period, while Bounty Killer, Hollow Point, and Jagwa turn Unexpected into a hard-edged posse cut with more bark than polish. Elephant Man’s Head Gone is the obvious crowd-mover, all manic energy and jump-up momentum, and Mr Lexx gets two strong turns, including the clean, dance-floor-ready We Roll and the cheekier Taxi alongside General B. Ce’Cile and Carl Henry add a lighter, flirtier twist on Bare As You Dare, while Alozade, Cobra, Powerman, Predator, and Maffia keep the juggling varied without breaking the pace.

What makes the riddim linger is how easily it slips between rough dancehall and crossover sweetness. Even with so many voices on deck, the beat stays recognizable from cut to cut, and that consistency is exactly why it became one of Kings of Kings’ more durable statements.
