Chill Spot Riddim arrived in 2012 from Chimney Records, the Kingston production team run by Jordan McClure and David Hayle. By that point Chimney had already developed a reputation for sleek, melody-forward dancehall and reggae productions that could live on radio, in the dance, and across the jugglings that keep a riddim moving. Chill Spot sits comfortably in that early run, with a clean instrumental and a breezy pulse that gave singers and DJs room to shape their own angle around the same groove.
The rhythm has a laid-back, sunlit feel rather than anything hard-edged. It moves with a midtempo sway, built for smooth phrasing and catchy hooks, and the vocal cuts play off that easy glide in different ways. Christopher Martin’s “Chill Spot” is the title cut for a reason, while Tarrus Riley’s “Dream Woman” brings his polished lovers-rock tone into the frame. Ce’Cile’s “Dem Yah Time” adds a sharper female perspective, and Mavado’s “Like Me” pushes the riddim into more confident dancehall territory. I-Octane’s “Keep Me Up” gives it a more reflective lift, while Voicemail’s “I Moved On” and Zagga’s “Remember The Days” round out the set with their own melodic approaches.
What makes the project work is the way Chimney keeps the production light but detailed, letting the songs carry the personality. It’s the kind of riddim that feels designed for replay value: one frame, several moods, and a lineup that shows how versatile a well-cut reggae instrumental can be.
