Cali Roots Overview
The story of this musical backdrop begins in the studio, where reggae and dancehall sounds blend with modern energy. The riddim was carefully crafted, with the dub engineer shaping its deep bass and echoing effects. Every layer was mixed to make sure the groove felt timeless, echoing through speakers at sound system nights and backyard gatherings. Collie Buddz played a big part in bringing this project to life. Known for his hit song “Come Around,” Collie Buddz has long been a bridge between reggae and dancehall. His experience and touch helped guide the riddim from its early stages to a polished, ready-to-release sound. As the riddim took shape, artists were invited to add their own voices. Kabaka Pyramid & Collie Buddz teamed up for “Natural High,” bringing Kabaka’s conscious lyrics to the mix. MediSun also shared a version of “Natural High,” adding his own flavor. Iration & Collie Buddz joined forces for “Be Alright,” with Iration’s reggae rock style shining through. The project reached across genres, with Felt, Atmosphere, Murs & Collie Buddz delivering “Heavy D,” a track that connects hip hop and reggae. Konshens & Collie Buddz brought dancehall energy on “Blaze Away.” Groundation & Collie Buddz offered “Good Over Evil,” and KBong & Collie Buddz kept the mood light with “Dancing In The Rhythm.” Other highlights came from Demarco & Collie Buddz with “Stuck On You,” Ballyhoo! & Collie Buddz on “The Come Up,” and Passafire & Collie Buddz with “Waste No Time.” Each artist’s style shines, but the riddim ties them all together, keeping reggae’s roots alive in 2021.
