Cali Roots Riddim 2023 – Ineffable Records

Collie Buddz turned the Cali Roots Riddim into a summer roll call for the California reggae orbit, and the 2023 edition lands through Ineffable Records on June 30, 2023. Ineffable is the label arm of Ineffable Music, the independent crew behind a lot of live-reggae infrastructure as well as recorded releases, and this one sits right in the lane they’ve been carving around the Cali Roots festival brand.

The riddim has a bright, easy sway rather than a heavy bashment push. It feels built for open-air systems: skanking guitar, warm bass, clean drum pockets, and enough melodic lift for singers to stretch out without crowding the groove. Collie Buddz is credited as producer, with the instrumental also tied to J-Vibe, and that pairing gives the track a polished, modern roots-reggae frame that still leaves room for crossover voices.

The lineup is wide, but a few cuts do a lot of the talking. The Movement’s “Open The Door” gives the riddim one of its strongest hooks, while Busy Signal brings his usual sharp phrasing to “A Thousand Times. ” Fiji, Khalia, Gondwana, J Boog with The Green, Mihali, SOJA, and Irie Souljah all fit the pocket in different ways, from smooth melodic sing-jay turns to band-fronted harmonies. Little Stranger, Sara Lugo, Hector Roots Lewis, Iya Terra with Dub Inc, Luciano, Anthony B, Mike Love, Inna Vision, The Expendables, Cydeways, and Claire Wright broaden the palette further, and the instrumental closes the set out cleanly for DJs and selectors.
