Blindfold Riddim (2002) – Hall

Blindfold came out in 2002 from Hall Productions, the label run by Marion Hall, better known then as Lady Saw. It sits in that sharp early-2000s dancehall pocket where the drums snap hard, the bass stays muscular, and the space leaves room for deejays to ride the groove with attitude.

The lineup is strong and properly varied: Capleton on “Hunt Dem Food, ” Lady Saw on “Heavy Gal” and “Tightness Supply, ” Sizzla on “Just Through Mi Love, ” Bling Dawg on “Bark Fi Di Gal Dem, ” Roundhead on “Fine Waist Line, ” Vybz Kartel on “Mi Love Di Gal Dem, ” Ward 21 on “Regular, ” Wayne Wonder and Surprize on “Schizophrenic Flow, ” Tanto Metro and Devonte on “Rock On, ” Brigadier Jerry and Spragga Benz on “She Anuh Ready Gal, ” and Ce’Cile on “Gal Company. ”

The cuts that really frame the riddim are the ones from Capleton, Lady Saw, and Sizzla. Capleton drives “Hunt Dem Food” with militant energy, while Lady Saw’s two turns bring the bawdy, confident patter that made her name. Sizzla’s “Just Through Mi Love” adds a more melodic pressure, giving the riddim a spiritual edge without softening it. Bling Dawg and Vybz Kartel push the gal anthem angle from different sides, and Roundhead’s “Fine Waist Line” sits right in the middle of the juggling tradition that made these 2002 sets work.

Blindfold has the kind of brittle, forward-driving feel that lets the voices do the heavy lifting, and it still plays like a proper sound-system riddim rather than a studio afterthought.
