Akabu Riddim – Stringray Records

Back in 2005, when roots singers were still leaning hard on crisp one-riddim sets, Stringray Records cut Akabu Riddim with a tight little trio of voices and a clean version cut to match. Frankie Paul’s “Don’t Break My Heart” brings the emotional edge, while Freddie McGregor’s “What Goes Around” has that seasoned, easy sway he could lock into without sounding forced. Prince Malachi’s “Onward We Go” keeps the mood upright and reflective, giving the rhythm a more conscious push. The riddim itself feels sturdy and unhurried, the kind of mid-2000s reggae backdrop that leaves room for melody without getting too glossy. It’s a compact release, but the lineup gives it enough character to sit comfortably among the better 2005 Reggae Riddims.
