Tempo Riddim (2005) – Ras I Records

Ras I Records’ 2005 Tempo Riddim sits in that mid-2000s roots-reggae pocket where the vocal line-up does most of the talking: Capleton comes in sharp on “Speak Your Mind, ” while Jah Mason’s “Open Up Yuh Heart” and Lutan Fyah’s “Put It On” keep the spiritual pressure on. Luciano, Mikey General and Ajah Asi share “Ain’t Got Love, ” which gives the rhythm one of its warmer, more melodic moments, and the whole set runs lean with just seven cuts plus the version. It’s the kind of production that feels made for sound systems and conscious dancehall selectors rather than big studio polish, with enough space in the riddim for each singer to lean into the groove. Dropping in 2005, it also lands right in that era when conscious roots was still carrying plenty of weight in the dance.
