African Children Riddim – Inkalink Records

Appolo J opens African Children Riddim with “Une Vibe Ensemble, ” and that’s the cut that sets the tone for Inkalink Records’ 2005 four-track reggae session: lean, rootsy, and voiced with a francophone ease that keeps the riddim moving without crowding it. Azrock’s “Les Aigris” and Difanga’s “Tout Ce Que J’aime” keep the focus on sharp, plainspoken singing rather than heavy ornament, while Junior Jim’s “Quel Avenir” pushes the set into more reflective territory. The tracklist is short, but it has a nice internal balance, with each artist approaching the same foundation from a slightly different angle. Still, it’s Appolo J who leaves the first real imprint here, and Junior Jim who closes the circle with the most searching note.
