7ven Riddim – Uim Records

UIM Records’ 7ven Riddim arrived in 2014 as a seven-cut dancehall juggling, with Anju Blaxx steering the production under the UIM banner. The set landed on July 8, 2014 and kept the label’s run of rhythm-driven work moving in the middle of the decade.

The riddim has that clean, sharp 2010s dancehall pulse: firm drum programming, a rolling bass line, and enough space in the arrangement for each voice to cut through. It feels built for radio play and juggling alike, with the instrumental staying taut rather than overcrowded. Tommy Lee Sparta’s Nympho brings the darker, more provocative edge he was known for early in his career, while Alaine’s Better Than This gives the riddim a smoother, more melodic counterweight. Bugle’s Educated Dunce is the most pointed of the conscious cuts, riding the beat with the kind of message-forward delivery that made him one of the more reliable writers in modern dancehall.

Chris Martin’s Change Your Life adds a polished, aspirational tone, and Dre Island’s Hide Away draws on the softer, more reflective side of his catalogue before he became a bigger name in the roots-dancehall crossover lane. RR’s Crazy In Love and Dejour’s Show I Love You round out the project with the kind of relationship-themed writing that kept the riddim anchored in everyday dancehall concerns. The release works because it balances style and substance without losing its dancehall snap.
