Built around The Tide Is High and credited here to Duke Reid, Bunny Striker Lee, Prince Tony Robinson and Supa Dups across Treasure Isle, Gorgon, African Museum, Front Line and Kon Live, this set traces the song’s long run from the original 1967 Paragons and Tommy McCook and The Supersonics cut through later versions by Johnny Clarke, Gregory Isaacs and U-Roy. The tune was first made famous by The Paragons on Treasure Isle, with John Holt’s writing and that signature rocksteady melody carrying it into later reggae and dancehall interpretations. It is a tidy reminder of how one of Jamaican music’s most durable hooks could move from classic rocksteady into roots-era cover versions and then into the 2008 Kardinal Offishall revamp, while still keeping the same recognisable pull.
