This is a big list of many (but not all) songs that use the beat called the “Taxi Riddim” (which also has other names). The original beat was created by Maurice Wellington in 1973 and produced by George Bell and Maurice Wellington. In the 1980s, many other music companies/labels started using the Taxi Riddim, and it kept being used into the 1990s, and right up to present day. Taxi Overview
Today, the bashment flow is celebrated as a key sound in reggae and dancehall. DJs and fans still play these songs at parties, and the rhythm continues to inspire new artists. Its energy and groove remind listeners of the strong and rebellious spirit that reggae music brought to the world. Looking back, several artists helped shape this flow. Ackee & Saltfish made their mark with “Guh Tru,” a track that stands out for its catchy delivery. Admiral Tibet’s “Devil Pickney” is remembered for its message and smooth vocals. Al Campbell’s “Tracks On” adds a soulful touch, while Ambelique’s “Taxi” shows off his unique style. The collaboration between Ambelique, Brain, and Tony Gold on “Taxi” brought a fresh sound to the riddim. Brain’s own version, “Taxi,” also kept the groove alive. Other songs like Andi’s “Who’s Sad, Happy Or Gay,” Anthony Johnson’s “Stop Call Me” and “Wicked Man,” and Anthony Malvo’s “Echoes Of My Mind” all used the same foundation, each adding their own flavor. Behind the scenes, producers like George Bell and Maurice Wellington played a big role. They helped craft the original Taxi Riddim, setting a standard for quality and creativity. In the 1980s, other music labels noticed its popularity and began using the riddim for their own releases. This trend continued into the 1990s and still goes on today, making the Taxi Riddim one of the most recognized in reggae history. The bashment flow, built on this classic riddim, remains an important part of dancehall’s story. Its influence is still strong in reggae music around the world.
