Tartane City Riddim sits in that early-2010s run of French Caribbean dancehall projects that leaned on local voices and a tough, no-frills digital pulse. The set is fairly deep, with 13 tracks and 15 artists, and it moves fast between the streetwise grit of Irosh’s “Longtime Yo Dead, ” Lexx Mafius’ “Real Vybz, ” and the crew cut “Tartane Town” from Luss Surfeur Yo and Lexx Mafius. What gives it its shape is the language and attitude more than any big crossover reach: rough-edged hooks, regional slang, and a sound that feels geared for sound system play rather than polish. Apach and Outlaw’s “Bizness La Ri” keeps that tension sharp, while the closing “Daweed – System Lan Sav” leaves the riddim on a hard, clipped note that sums up the whole project nicely.
