Street Vybz Riddim (2010) – Adidjahiem / Notnice Records

Street Vybz came out of that sharp NotNice period when dancehall was getting stripped down to hard drums, icy synths and hook-heavy party talk. The 2010 juggling was done with Adidjahiem Records and Notnice Records, and it sits right inside the Gaza run that made Kartel’s camp so dominant at the time.

What makes the riddim work is its mood: dark in the intro, then bouncing and urgent once the beat drops. It feels built for the dance but still has that eerie edge NotNice was getting known for, the kind that gives even lighthearted party songs a slight sting. Kartel uses the title cut to push the Street Vybz name hard, while “Pure Love Mi Give Gyal” flips into cleaner romance and gives the set a little balance. Popcaan’s “Up Inna Di Club” is one of the project’s easiest pull-ups, all swagger and club-ready confidence, and Shawn Storm’s “Vybz Party” keeps the energy in that same lane. Merital Family’s “When We Party” adds a more melodic group touch and helps round out the juggling without breaking its groove.

The release is tightly tied to the Portmore Empire era, when NotNice was pairing with Kartel on a string of influential projects and helping define the sound around them. Street Vybz is one of those riddims that felt like a brand extension as much as a beat, and that is exactly why it stuck.
