Spook Riddim – Millbeatz Entertainment

Back in 2012, Millbeatz Entertainment was turning out the kind of Trinidad-rooted dancehall that had a raw, local energy, and Spook Riddim sits right in that pocket. The cut that really grabs you is Diamond’s “Under D Hood, ” which rides the rhythm with a streetwise, no-frills edge, while Larynx Merit’s “Show Who You Are” gives the project a sharper, more declarative opening. You also get the sly bounce of Makamillion’s “Wine It Down Low” and the cheekier side of the riddim on Raskal’s “Yuh Body Good” and Royal’s “Sex Uh Gyal. ” The whole thing runs with eight vocal tracks, no fat on it, and that tight tracklist keeps the focus on the singers rather than any big studio gloss. It was one of those Millbeatz releases that caught the sound of a young Trinidad dancehall scene before the wider rollout came later.
