Soviet Riddim (2012) – Hot Boxx Records

2012 was still a busy year for compact, digital dancehall riddims, and Soviet Riddim sits right in that lane with Hot Boxx Records keeping the focus tight and spare. With only two voicings, Nymron’s “We A Kill” and Versatile’s “Killing Me Willing, ” the project leaves plenty of room for the rhythm itself to do the talking: clipped drum programming, a hard little bass run, and that chilly, mechanical pulse the title suggests. There’s no overcrowding here, just a lean bashment framework that lets the deejays ride the pocket rather than fight it. Versatile gets the nod as the key name, but the real pull is the riddim’s dry, percussive swing and the way it keeps a steady, mid-tempo march underneath both cuts.
