Smooth Bass Riddim – Fams House Records

There’s a mellow, bass-heavy swing to Smooth Bass Riddim that feels more patient than pushy, with enough low-end muscle to carry the songs without crowding them out. Fams House Records lines up a neat little 2010 dancehall set here, and the voice that really locks into that mood is G Whizz on “Mi Goal, ” where the hook sits right in the pocket of the rhythm. Munga’s “Jah Love Me” and Laden’s “In Love With Me” keep the emotional side of the project in view, while Brain Damage opens things with “Music Save Me” and sets the tone early. It’s a seven-track run in all, with the instrumental tucked in among the vocals, almost like a brief pause before the riddim rolls on again.
