Nine cuts, ten artists, and a very familiar name at the center of it all: Buzwakk Records’ 2017 take on Shank I Sheck dusts off one of reggae’s oldest and most versioned foundations and runs it through a modern roots selection. Anthony Johnson, Bucky Jo, Bunny Lye Lye and Junior Cat, Claire Angel, Ray I, Vernon Maytone and the rest keep the focus on singers and deejays rather than studio trickery, which suits a riddim that has always lived on its bassline and horn-laced shape. The old Shank I Sheck lineage goes back to Baba Brooks and King Edwards, and this update keeps that lineage intact with a spare, mid-tempo pulse and a blunt, rolling bass pattern that leaves plenty of room for the vocals to carry the weight.
