Secrets Overview
In 2008, a new reggae riddim was taking shape in Kingston’s studios. Crafted by Don Corleon, a producer known for his modern approach and signature touch, the riddim was built with a warm, melodic base. The dub engineer, known as Craig “Leftside” Parks, played a key role in shaping the sound, adding subtle echoes and deep grooves that gave the tracks their distinctive feel. As the riddim developed, it attracted some of reggae’s most respected voices. Alaine recorded “love of a lifetime,” her smooth vocals blending perfectly with the romantic mood of the riddim. Buju Banton, a Grammy-winning reggae artist, brought depth with “sleepless nights,” adding his powerful delivery to the collection. D Major’s “perfect strangers” stood out for its heartfelt storytelling and catchy hooks. Jah Cure, celebrated for his hit “Longing For,” contributed “miles away,” bringing his soulful energy to the mix. Morgan Heritage, a group that won the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album in 2016, added “gun town,” layering harmonies over the riddim’s steady pulse. Other artists, like Pressure with “bless my soul,” Queen Ifrica with “keep it to yourself,” and TOK’s “so cold,” each brought their own flavor, making the collection diverse yet unified. From its creation in the studio to its release, this riddim became a favorite at sound system nights. Today, fans still play the track base as a roots memory of 2008, remembering the voices and the vibe that defined a moment in reggae music.
