Blue Sky Productions hit the middle of 2020 with a timely dancehall juggling that caught the mood of the moment without turning into a gimmick. Sanitizer Riddim rides a bright, clipped instrumental built for sound system play, with a clean bounce and enough space for each vocal to land sharply. The title says a lot: this is a pandemic-era concept record, but it plays like a proper dancehall project rather than a novelty one.

The strongest pull comes from the name-calling and personality on the cuts. Beenie Man and Demarco team up on “Dweet Dweet Dweet, ” which gives the riddim instant star power and a veteran-to-veteran energy. Demarco also returns on “Proud, ” a tune that was issued in both raw and radio-edit form, while D’Angel brings a more reflective edge on “Tears of Joy. ” Macka Diamond’s “Hygiene Police” is the track that most fully draws on the theme, turning the sanitizer concept into a sharp dancehall joke with her usual sly authority. Vershon’s “Nineteen” rounds things out with youthful swagger, again in raw and radio-friendly versions.

Blue Sky Productions keep the arrangement lean and effective, with the instrumental sitting comfortably under each voice and giving the juggling enough movement for selectors to work it. Sanitizer Riddim fits squarely into the 2020 wave of themed dancehall releases, but the line-up gives it more than a passing hook: this is one of those riddims where the concept, the voices, and the timing all line up.
