RUGGED RIDDIM produced by MANATEE RECORDS 1999
Rugged Overview
In 1999, the bashment rhythm known as Rugged Riddim made a big impact on Jamaica’s dancehall scene. The journey began in the studio, where a talented track builder crafted a beat full of energy and layered sounds. The rhythm’s pulsing bass and lively arrangement quickly caught the attention of MANATEE RECORDS, a label with a reputation for pushing dancehall forward. MANATEE RECORDS, known for working with both established and rising stars, has released several influential riddims since the late 1990s. Once the foundation was set, a select group of artists was invited to bring the riddim to life. A.R.P. & Zebra teamed up for “Everybody,” a song that quickly became a dancefloor favorite. Zebra, already recognized for his hit “Matty Son,” added his signature style to the track. Clement Kid delivered “Gwaan Well,” adding another layer to the project. Delly Ranks, who would later gain international attention with songs like “Headache,” brought his unique flow to “Grinds Man.” Major Sample contributed “Yuh Nah,” while Rugged closed out the release with “Version.” As the sound systems blasted Rugged Riddim across the island, the rhythm became a staple at parties and street dances. Even today, fans of 1999 dancehall remember the energy and creativity that this bashment release brought to the scene.
