    Rematch Riddim - Footsteps Records

Footsteps Records’ Rematch Riddim landed in 2002, and it sits right in that hard-edged early-2000s dancehall pocket where the drums do the heavy lifting and the hooks have to hit fast. The riddim is tied to producer Danny Browne, with Footsteps also credited in the broader catalog as a Browne-linked production imprint. The project later circulated as Riddim Driven: Rematch, which helped keep it in the conversation beyond its first run.

The line-up is deep, but the cuts that matter most are the ones from Beenie Man, Elephant Man, Sizzla, Tony Rebel, Richie Stephens, T. O. K. , and Tanto Metro and Devonte. Beenie Man’s “Drive By” and “Pure Hot Gal” bring the slick, swaggering patter he was known for at the time, while Elephant Man’s dance-floor calls push the rhythm into party mode. Sizzla’s “Too Rahtid” and Tony Rebel’s “Put On The Pressure” pull the project in a more conscious, militant direction, giving the riddim some balance instead of letting it become pure slam. T. O. K. ’s “Mi Waan Fi Know” and Tanto Metro and Devonte’s “Lovin You Require” add harmony and group chemistry, while Richie Stephens’ title tune gives the riddim a more melodic anchor.

What makes Rematch work is the contrast between the beat’s streetwise pressure and the range of voices riding it. It sounds like one of those 2002 juggling rhythms made for radio, sound-clash pull-ups, and the dance at once, with enough grit to carry the DJs and enough bounce to keep the girls moving.
