Real Time Riddim – Grillaras Productions

Real Time Riddim came through Grillaras Productions in 2005, with Khabir Bonner and Kurt Sadler behind the label and production work. Grillaras would go on to become closely linked with roots-conscious, singjay-led projects, but this set already shows that instinct in motion: a one-rhythm package aimed squarely at message music and positive reasoning.

The riddim has a steady, midtempo swing with a firm drum pattern and a warm, dubby low end that leaves plenty of space for melody and phrasing. It is not trying to sound flashy. Instead, it has that early-2000s conscious reggae feel where the groove stays patient and the voices carry the weight. Anthony B’s “Keep Rising” and Capleton’s “Open Your Eyes” set the tone with uplift and urgency, while Chezidek’s “Love Is So Beautiful” and Lutan Fyah’s “Good Health” bring a softer spiritual edge. Junior Kelly’s “Not All About Sex” and Mikey General’s “No More War” lean straight into social commentary, which suits the rhythm’s sober pulse.

The deeper cut is how evenly the lineup is spread across veteran firebrands and rising conscious voices. Chrisinti’s “Mystery Morning, ” Norris Man’s “Humble Heart, ” Patriot’s “Unfortunate Foes, ” Military Man’s “Ganja Delivery, ” and Daddigon’s “Hatred” all add different shades to the same foundation. The result is a riddim that plays like a small snapshot of the roots revival moment, with each singer finding a different angle on uplift, struggle, and survival.
