2007 was a busy moment for roots-minded reggae, and Ras In Riddim sits right in that pocket with a warm, horn-led foundation and a bassline that keeps the whole thing moving without crowding the singers. Roots Survival Records has said this was the label’s first riddim, originally cut around Big Famili’s “Racines, ” and you can hear that purpose in the way the voices are lined up: Jahmali’s “Serious Question” leans into sharp social commentary, while Omar Perry’s “Let Jah Rise” brings a firmer spiritual lift. Norris Man’s “Dem Fallow” is another strong cut, riding the groove with that rough-edged clarity he does so well. There’s even a Spanish-language turn with Carmen and El Condorsito on “Fronteras, ” which gives the set a broader Caribbean feel. It’s a tidy little snapshot of where roots reggae was sitting in the mid-2000s: conscious, melodic, and still very much built for sound systems.
