PUNANNY RIDDIM produced by LLOYD ‘KING JAMMY’ JAMES / WARD 21 (GREENSLEEVES RHYTHM ALBUM #5) 2000
Punanny Overview
The Punanny Riddim made a big splash in 2000, coming out of Jamaica’s dancehall scene. Released as part of the Greensleeves Rhythm Album series, this bashment project brought together top artists and producers. The riddim was built by legendary producer Lloyd ‘King Jammy’ James, working with Ward 21. King Jammy is known for helping shape digital dancehall in the 1980s and producing hits like Wayne Smith’s “Under Mi Sleng Teng.” Ward 21, a group of producers and artists, also became known for their hard-hitting riddims and work with big names in dancehall. This release features Admiral Bailey, who helped make the original “Punanny” riddim famous. He appears here with “Healthy Body” and “Punanny,” two tracks that show his classic style. Admiral Bailey’s “Punanny” is a dancehall anthem from the late 1980s, still loved by fans today. Anthony B brings his energetic delivery to “Man And Woman Fi Dance.” Known for songs like “Fire Pon Rome,” Anthony B is one of the leading voices in conscious dancehall. Beenie Man, who won a Grammy for his album “Art & Life,” gives his take with “Roll Deep.” Buccaneer, famous for blending dancehall with opera in tracks like “Boom Bye Bye,” appears with “Bruk Weh.” Danny English, known for his work with Egg Nog, delivers “Shot Cocky.” The riddim’s strong, bouncing beat made it a favorite in street dances and sound clashes, helping to define the sound of 2000s dancehall.
