Protection Riddim – Penthouse Records

A taut, mid-tempo dancehall cut with a stern bassline and just enough room for the vocals to cut through, Protection Riddim keeps its focus narrow and unhurried. Penthouse Records pares it back to three tracks, with Buju Banton and Terry Ganzie carrying the vocal side and a clean version anchoring the set. The title track fits Buju’s authority especially well; he rides the rhythm with that clipped, sermon-like pressure that made his Penthouse work so effective in the first place. Terry Ganzie’s “Inspiration” leans into the same serious mood, but it’s Buju’s “Protection” that leaves the sharper mark and gives the riddim its center.
