In 2005, when dancehall was still in that sharp, hook-heavy mode, Retro Mama Riddim kept things lean with just three cuts and no dead weight. Assassin’s “Mad Ova Yuh” brings the heat straight away, all bite and momentum, while Bounty Killer’s “Gyal Dem King” leans into his usual badman-charisma with a girlie-man anthem that feels tailor-made for the dance. Mr G, better known as Goofy, closes it out with “Guiness and Chronic (Edit), ” a name that tells you exactly what kind of lime-time energy this one was chasing. With only three artists on the set, the riddim feels more like a tight 7-inch showcase than a sprawling compilation, and that compact 2005 format gives it a nice slice-of-era feel.
