Prison Oval Rock Riddim – Volcano

Volcano’s Prison Oval Rock Riddim sits right in that early-’80s run when Junjo Lawes was turning raw soundsystem business into durable reggae anthems, and this one came out in 1983 with Barrington Levy’s title cut at the center. Levy’s “Prison Oval Rock” is the tune that set the tone, but the riddim’s afterlife is just as telling: Carlton Livingston’s “Soundman Clash, ” Yellowman’s “Society Party, ” and Sugar Minott’s “Lovers Race” all push it into different corners without losing that tough, crowd-ready swing. Heard alongside Volcano’s heavier classics, it feels a little leaner and more chant-driven, less studio-polished than the later digital era but still sharp enough to carry a whole dance.
