Pre-Release Riddim – H20 Records

H20 Records and ZJ Liquid kept the Pre-Release Riddim in that early-2010s dancehall pocket where street-ready singles and radio-friendly hooks could live on the same juggling. The release came in 2012, and the idea behind it grew out of Liquid’s popular Pre-Release Wednesdays selector routine, which gave the project its name and its momentum. It sits comfortably in his H20 catalogue as one of the sharper dancehall sets from that period, with the instrumental version helping to expose a rhythm that is more taut and driving than flashy.

The riddim has a skittering, percussion-led bounce, with enough low-end weight to carry big-voiced riders but enough space in the arrangement for each artist to cut through. Mavado’s “Real Niggaz Do Real Things” is the anchor, especially in the raw version, which gives the project a harder street edge. Elephant Man’s “Yeh Yeh Yeh” adds his usual high-energy chatter, while I-Octane, Demarco, Khago, and Sizzla each bring a different shade of intensity, from swagger and hype to tougher, more conscious phrasing. Raine Seville’s “Hold Andstay” adds a lighter, more playful contrast, and Delly Ranx and Ninja Kid help widen the rhythmic range without breaking the flow.

Popcaan’s “Nuh Outlaw” gives the riddim another high-profile pull, and G and Chico’s “Fake Friend” rounds out the set with a more reflective note. It is the kind of juggling that thrives on contrast: a strong central groove, voices from different corners of dancehall, and just enough variation to keep the whole thing moving.
