Parkinsons Riddim – Greensleeves Records

Greensleeves Records’ 2005 Parkinsons Riddim sits in that mid-2000s period when the label was still pushing compact, single-riddim 7-inch sets rather than sprawling compilations, and this one is as lean as they come with just two cuts. The production has that clipped, forward-leaning dancehall snap of the era, all tight drums and a twitchy bass line that leaves plenty of room for the voices. Busy Signal’s “Nasty” comes in first with the sharper, more aggressive edge, while Vybz Kartel’s “Ambulence” is the darker payoff, riding the rhythm with his usual cold-blooded ease and a title that fits the siren-like mood of the tune. It’s a brief release, but the pairing of Busy Signal and Kartel gives the riddim just enough weight before the instrumental closes it out.
