Nippy Riddim – Otis Riddim Records

Back in 2017, when dancehall was still leaning hard into lean, sound-clash-ready rhythms, Otis Riddim Records lined up Nippy Riddim with a compact set of voices rather than a crowded all-star parade. The tracklist is short and direct: Dohlance on “What Is It, ” Fya Skeptic on “Roughest of Time, ” Iwah-Tyk with “Love Lead the Way, ” Star Bingi on “Visionary, ” and Zally cutting “Reggae Party. ” The riddim itself comes across as stripped-back and percussive, with a clipped drum pattern and a cold, nagging bassline that leaves plenty of space for the vocalists to work. That spacing is the point here; the songs ride the groove without fighting it, and the whole cut has the clipped, mid-tempo feel of a 2017 dancehall instrumental built for quick replay rather than big ornament.
