Movie Star Riddim (2009) – Chimney Records

Chimney Records’ Movie Star Riddim landed in 2009, right in the middle of the label’s run as one of the more reliable modern dancehall hit factories. David Hayle and Jordan McClure were the force behind Chimney Records, a Kingston-based outfit that would later be tied to bigger jugglings and crossover work, but this one already had the hallmarks of their style: crisp, digital, radio-ready, and designed to move cleanly through a sound system set. The riddim sits in that late-2000s dancehall pocket where the pulse is steady, the synths are bright, and the arrangement leaves plenty of room for artists to tag their own personality onto the same backbone.

The strongest cuts are the ones that play to contrast. Vybz Kartel’s Like a Movie and Mavado’s Let Me Go set the tone with the warzone swagger and melodic menace that defined that era’s dancehall rivalry. Serani’s Give Me softens the edge with a smoother, more crossover-minded approach, while Wayne Marshall’s Party and Elephant Man’s Walk Out push the rhythm toward peak-time energy. Bugle’s Dem A Fight and Ishawna’s I Want You add sharper lyrical angles, and Jah Vinci and Shawn Storm’s Gaza Wine gives the riddim one of its most memorable crew moments. Black Ryno, Demarco, Flex, Raine Seville, Delly Ranx, Leftside and Mr. Evil, Fire Linx, and Esco all help fill out a juggling that stays lively without sounding crowded.
