Monte Carlo Riddim – Purple Skunk Records

A warm, midtempo reggae groove with just enough bounce to keep the vocals moving, Monte Carlo Riddim feels like one of those early-2011 sets that quietly pulled in a strong cross-section of singers. Purple Skunk Records keeps the slate tight, and the best pairing here is probably Jah Cure’s “Mother Earth” against Romain Virgo’s “Let U Go, ” two cuts that sit nicely in the riddim’s easy forward motion without crowding it. Cecile opens things with “Missing U, ” Ikaya brings a sharper emotional edge on “Aint Giving Up, ” and Pressure’s “Love U So” gives the project a little extra lift. It landed in 2011 and, at seven songs, doesn’t waste a second.
