Goldcup Records lined up eight voices on Mirror Riddim, and the cast tells you straight away this is aimed at the deeper roots end of 2010 dancehall, not the glossy crossover side. Jah Nyne, Khari Kill, Lutan Fyah, Bushman and Teflon all bring conscious writing to a riddim that leans firm and earthy, with the kind of measured pulse and rolling bass that leaves room for the singers to stretch out. Khari Kill’s title cut and Lutan Fyah’s “Too Long” feel like the sharpest hooks in the set, while Ras Ijah and Bushman’s “One More Load” adds some extra weight in the middle. Goldcup keeps the whole thing tight and unified, and Teflon’s “Good Seeds” closes it out on the same steady, serious note.
