Material Riddim – Dutty Rock Production

Sean Paul’s Dutty Rock camp was already leaning hard into producer mode by the time Material Riddim landed in late 2011, and you can hear that confidence in the way the project moves from Ce’Cile’s “Material World” into Sean Paul’s own “Roll Wid Da Don” and the Spragga Benz duet “Call On Jah. ” It’s a soca-leaning cut with a bright, party-forward pulse, but the edge comes from the roster more than any carnival gloss: Mr. Vegas, Tami Chynn, Voicemail, Laden, and Leftside all get lanes to work in. Sean Paul had already framed this as a follow-up to Blaze Fia, and Material feels like a cleaner, more deliberate statement from Dutty Rock Productions. The sequence even separates the radio and raw versions of “Get Drunk” before sliding into the rest of the singles, which gives the set a medley-like flow instead of a random pile-up of voices.
