Mama Riddim – Sweet Music

Out of Jamaica’s 2018 dancehall lane, Mama Riddim came through as a lean six-cut set from Sweet Music, and it’s the kind of project that leans more on message and melody than raw aggression. Nesbeth’s “Remove My Enemies” and Kibaki’s “My Mother” give the riddim its most memorable turns, while Singing Sweet’s “Don’t Worry” keeps the title feeling honest rather than sentimental. The full run also lines up Blawzey, Dan Mafia and Nazine, so the production gets a decent spread of voices without ever feeling crowded. Sweet Music had already been working a melodic, radio-friendly strain of dancehall, and this one sits neatly in that part of the catalogue: compact, devotional in places, and more concerned with clean hooks than heavy boss talk.
