Reality Riddim (2018) – Cashflow Rinse/Kevstar Records

Reality Riddim arrived in 2018 through KevStar Records and Cashflow Rinse, a dancehall juggling that sits squarely in the modern Jamaican studio tradition: one pull-up of a rhythm, then a string of voices testing the same pattern from different angles. KevStar has been working with dancehall cuts for years, and the project also came out digitally through JWONDER 21ST Digital, which helped push it beyond the local circuit.

The rhythm itself is clipped and direct, with a hard stepping drum pattern and enough space in the mix for patois phrasing to cut through. It has that street-level tension dancehall does well, carrying a serious tone without losing momentum. The instrumental leaves room for the artists to shift between chant, talk, and melody, and the clean/raw pairs sharpen the contrasts in delivery.

Vershon’s Alright is one of the strongest pull-ins here, with his familiar singjay ease giving the riddim a more melodic lift. Maestro Don’s Chargie comes in twice, clean and raw, and his clipped, forceful delivery gives the track a sharper edge. Propa Fade’s Ambition and Sagitarr’s Weh She Want follow the same clean/raw format, and both cuts sit well in the riddim’s no-nonsense mood. Coltont’s Hunt My Own and Zamunda’s Psalms widen the palette, with Zamunda’s title suggesting the more spiritual lane the riddim can still accommodate.

As a project, Reality Riddim works because it centres on voice and attitude. It is a lean dancehall set, but not a throwaway one, and the mix of street talk, determination, and faith gives it a clear identity.
