MAMA RIDDIM produced by HI POWER MUSIC 2001
Mama Overview
In 2001, reggae was exploring new sounds, but some producers brought back the rocksteady flow. This style, with its gentle swing and deep bass, felt fresh again on sound systems that year. The Mama Riddim project was a perfect example, mixing classic vibes with a modern touch. The mastermind behind this project was HI POWER MUSIC, a UK-based reggae label known for roots productions. HI POWER MUSIC has a long history in the reggae community, working with both new and legendary artists. Their focus on conscious lyrics and uplifting rhythms has made them respected in sound system culture. The artists on this project each brought their own flavor. Al Campbell delivered “Baby Don't Cry,” showcasing his smooth voice that made him famous in the 1970s and 80s. Chaka Demus And Pliers, known for their global hit “Tease Me,” offered “Gone Too Soon” with their signature blend of deejay and singer. Jc Lodge, who gained fame with “Telephone Love,” performed “Golden Touch,” adding soulful energy to the riddim. Junior Brammer, also known as Trinity, gave the song “Comanding Wife,” showing his roots in both deejay and singer traditions. Luciano, one of reggae’s modern roots stars and winner of the 2007 MOBO Award for Best Reggae Act, brought “Living On The Right Side,” with his uplifting lyrics. In 2001, these tracks played loud on sound systems, keeping roots reggae alive and well.
