Liquid Riddim – 2Hard Records

Liquid Riddim comes out of Jeremy Harding’s 2Hard camp at a point when he was already one of dancehall’s sharper rhythm makers, with a run that includes the kind of big, radio-friendly productions that could travel well beyond Kingston. Released in 2001 through VP Records, the project sits right in that early Riddim Driven era when one rhythm could carry a whole dance and still cut clean on compilation. The groove is slippery and mid-tempo, with a clean digital bounce, heavy bass movement and just enough space for the voices to breathe.

The lineup is strong and well chosen. Bling Dawg’s Got It Goin’ On and Lady Saw’s Tell You What You Like give the set its bite, while Lexxus’ You Bring It and Kiprich’s Wonder Why bring that sly, streetwise energy that was defining the era. Mad Cobra’s She Ain’t Feelin It and Lukie D’s Back Up Back Up widen the mood, and the Delly Ranks and Da’Ville pairing on Three Steps Forward adds a smoother, more melodic lift. Future Troubles, General Degree, Chico and Madd Anju keep the pressure on, with the instrumental Liquid Riddim Version letting the beat speak for itself.

What makes the riddim memorable is the balance: tough enough for dancehall, polished enough for the crossover lane, and versatile enough to carry both rude-boy talk and relationship cuts. That combination is exactly why this one held weight in the dancehall circuit.
