Kingston 13 Riddim – Ranch Entertainment

Kingston 13 came out of Ranch Entertainment’s early push as a new Shaggy-led label, with Shaun “Teflon” Pizzonia handling the production side. The project sits in that post–Big Yard moment when Shaggy’s camp was putting out reggae-fusion material with a clean, crossover-minded sheen while still keeping the one-drop pulse front and center. It was issued in 2012, and it quickly became one of the label’s first proper riddim compilations.

The riddim itself has a tough but polished feel: steady drums, a rolling bassline, and enough space in the arrangement for melodic hooks and clear vocal phrasing. It’s the kind of cut that can hold both singjay sweetness and harder dancehall chat without losing its shape. That balance is what makes the set work.

The strongest pointers here are the pairings that already carried some weight in the scene. Shaggy and Tarrus Riley on “Just Another Girl” bring the obvious vocal chemistry, with Riley’s warm, roots-leaning tone sitting neatly against Shaggy’s smoother delivery. Alaine’s “Avalanche” adds a sharper feminine counterpoint, while Gyptian’s “Reggae Morning” gives the riddim a more soulful, hook-heavy lift. J Boog’s “Low The Guns” widens the lane into reggae-pop territory, and Rayvon’s “Selecta” plays right into the label’s core family. Red Fox and Alju’s “Rocky Daddy Love” keeps the collaboration energy flowing, while Yung Juggz’s “Live Your Life” closes the set in both radio and raw form, a reminder that this was made to move through different corners of the dancehall and reggae market.
