Kemet Overview
The Kemet Riddim release in 2019 brought a fresh sound to roots reggae that year. This set gathered talented artists like Nadine Sutherland, Pam Hall, Lady Ann, Chyna Nicole, and Vonnii, each adding their own style and message. Nadine Sutherland’s “It Takes One” stands out with her smooth vocals and positive lyrics. Sutherland is well-known in reggae for her hit “Action” with Terror Fabulous, which became a classic in the 1990s. Pam Hall’s “What Yu Gon Do” adds a soulful touch. Hall is respected for her long career and for covering songs like “Dear Boopsie.” Lady Ann, with “This Yah Route,” brings her powerful deejay style, reminding listeners of her early success with “Informer.” Chyna Nicole’s “Amazing” and Vonnii’s “Back to Destiny” both offer uplifting messages, fitting the conscious roots vibe of the riddim. The music arranger on Kemet Riddim played a key role by blending classic reggae rhythms with modern touches. This made the songs catchy and danceable, while still keeping the roots feeling. The dub cut from this set is remembered as an important cultural work of 2019. Compared to other reggae collections of the time, the Kemet Riddim dub stands out for its clear production and deep echo effects. While many riddims in 2019 leaned toward digital sounds, this dub kept the organic feel alive, using space and reverb in a way that connects to classic Jamaican dub traditions.
