Three Star All Star catches that mid-’80s reggae sound with a tough, rootsy pulse and a proper sound-system feel. The set lines up ten different voices across the same riddim, so it moves from Ernie Roots’ “Private Singer” and General Lenkie’s “Loving Loving” into stronger, more militant turns like Rod Taylor’s “Come Follow Me” and Super Black’s “Music Is Love, ” with Nickie Dread and P Cool pushing the dancehall edge a little harder. Even Quinty’s “Version” nods to the era’s habit of letting the rhythm speak for itself. Released in 1985, this one sits right in that period when roots reggae and early dancehall were overlapping, and the compilation feel gives it the loose, selector-friendly shape of a yard session pressed to vinyl.
