Jay Riddim – Ricky Hype Productions

Muted snap. Jay Riddim lands with a lean, brisk dancehall pulse that leaves plenty of room for the vocals to carry the weight, and the 2015 Ricky Hype Productions cut keeps the arrangement tight rather than overloading it. Jahmiel’s “Bun Babylon” brings the clearest pull here, with Jayds leaning into a more reflective turn on “Tonight” before Jula closes the set with “Badmind, ” giving the three-song lineup a nice mix of conscience, mood, and street edge. The whole thing feels very much of that mid-2010s moment when smaller, sharply focused riddims were doing the work of louder, busier ones, especially in the wake of roots-leaning singjay cuts finding space inside straight dancehall frameworks.
