Damage Musiq’s Holocaust Riddim arrived in 2018 as a dark, rugged dancehall juggling built for the sound system. The one-drop pulse is stripped down but heavy, with a grim edge that gives the voicings plenty of room to cut through. Damage Musiq, the alias of Dwayne Parkinson, has long been tied to his own Damage Musiq Recording Label and was already known by 2018 for work with Demarco, Shatta Wale, Tommy Lee Sparta, Masicka, I-Octane, Shane O and Shawn Storm.
The lineup reflects that reach. Demarco’s “Right Now” opens with his sharp, charismatic delivery, while Jahmiel brings a more measured, conscious tension on “The System. ” Tommy Lee Sparta gets two pulls on the rhythm’s darker corners, with “Some Life” fitting his brooding style especially well. Jah Vinci’s “Laugh and Kill Dem” adds a melodic, almost taunting hook, and Teejay’s “. 40” pushes the project closer to gunman dancehall. Shatta Wale’s “Man Like Me” widens the riddim beyond Jamaica, giving it a Ghanaian dancehall stamp, and the Destiny Sparta and Renee 630 combination on “Defend Mi Cock” adds another raw, street-level angle.
What makes the riddim work is the contrast between the sparse production and the different personalities on top of it. The whole thing feels tense and aggressive, but never overcrowded. Damage’s own title cut closes the loop and confirms the project as a producer statement as much as a juggling plate.
