Holiday Riddim – Ancient Records

Back in 2012, when soca and dancehall were sharing more and more of the same party space, Ancient Records cut Holiday Riddim as a compact, voice-heavy session that keeps the energy moving without dragging out the idea. The set runs just 10 tracks and clocks in at a tidy 33 minutes, with Aidonia leading off in both raw and radio form on “Sweat Up Yuh Body, ” then Onton’s “Broad Out” and Tony Matterhorn’s “One Life” keeping the pace firm. Voicemail and Chevaughn add a sharper hook on “The One, ” while Jayds’ pair of “Life Over Death” cuts gives the compilation its most repeated refrain. The sequencing feels deliberate too: doubles, duet cuts, and then the instrumental at the end, like Ancient wanted a DJ-ready package that could work in a set as easily as on its own.
